When Life Imitates Art
Okay, who's seen the Odyssey?
While I’m not sure this is a universal experience, I have a feeling it could be an experience that reader’s here could relate to. Have you ever gone to see a movie, and had your mind altered not by the plot or characters, but simply by the visuals?
For as long as I can remember, watching movies was such an extreme form of world-building inspiration for me. I was the kid who would beg my mum to hire my favourite movies, so that I could pause certain scenes to examine in detail the rooms, or homes of certain characters, then run upstairs to act on said inspiration, whether it was changing my duvet cover, changing my rooms colour scheme, or dressing differently the next day. I’ve always loved taking inspiration from visuals I see on the screen, and more often that not it was historical movies the inspiration came from.
It was probably a good hint at an early age that this idea of ‘world-building’ with inspiration from the past, would be an important one in my adult life. I still experience the feeling regularly, and while it is completely impractical for me to change my entire wardrobe, or interior style based upon seeing a movie that strikes a cord of aesthetic inspiration, it is fun to delve into how these visual trends could be interpreted into fashion and interior style now.
Last night, my husband and I went to see the Odyssey, and while yes I genuinely thought the storyline was compelling, all I really wanted was three hours of a window into Queen Penelope’s world. The rick silk fabrics and jewel tones, the woven door screen, her weaving on a beautiful wooden loom, intricate gold jewelry, furniture that was both simple and beyond beautiful. There is a small wooden bed that Temeculas sleeps in as a boy, layered with stunning natural fibre fabrics, and I now need exactly that bed for my daughter. Unfortunately, despite extensive Google searching, I wasn’t able to find many stills of said inspiration to include - so a good excuse to see the movie if you haven’t! In the meantime, feel free to feast your eyes on below styling and interior inspiration, linkable where possible!
